Japan is one of the most rewarding destinations in the world — but it rewards preparation. First-timers often arrive expecting chaos and find extraordinary order instead. Here are the seven things we wish someone had told us before our first Tokyo trip.
1. Get a Suica Card Immediately
At Narita or Haneda airport, buy a Suica IC card (¥500 deposit). This contactless card works on virtually all trains, buses and even many convenience stores. It will save you enormous amounts of time buying individual tickets.
2. Pocket WiFi Over SIM
Rent a pocket WiFi device from the airport. Japan’s mobile infrastructure is excellent and having a dedicated device means you can share the connection with travel companions. Pre-book before you leave the UK.
3. Cash Still Rules
Many restaurants, shrines and small shops are cash-only. Always carry ¥5,000-10,000. 7-Eleven ATMs reliably accept foreign cards.
4. The Train System Is Not Complicated
It looks overwhelming but within two days you’ll be navigating it confidently. Google Maps is excellent for Tokyo train routing.
5. Shoes You Can Remove Quickly
You’ll be removing shoes at ryokans, many traditional restaurants and some temples. Slip-ons make this effortless.
