Thailand has dozens of beautiful islands, but if you’re a first-timer, the choice usually comes down to two: Phuket or Koh Samui. They’re both stunning, both popular with British tourists, and both offer dramatically different experiences.
Phuket
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and the most developed. Patong Beach is the entertainment hub — ideal if you want nightlife, restaurants and easy access to water sports and day trips. The west coast beaches like Kata and Karon are more family-friendly. Phuket Airport has direct flights and connections from London in around 11-12 hours.
Koh Samui
Koh Samui is smaller, quieter and more upmarket. The main beach at Chaweng has plenty going on, but the island generally attracts couples and families seeking a more relaxed pace. The resort infrastructure is excellent, with some outstanding five-star hotels. Getting there requires a connection — typically Bangkok or Singapore.
Which Should You Choose?
First time in Thailand with a group or family who wants variety? Phuket. Couples or those seeking pure relaxation? Koh Samui. Flights to Phuket from London from £850 return. Call 0203 745 5786.
